Often confused with Red Stopper – Eugenia rhombea – Redberry Stopper is also a state endangered, upright large shrub/small tree from Miami-Dade County and the Keys. It is the only one of our native stoppers to have a red fruit. Look for the distinctive “drip point” leaf shape to help you identify Redberry Stopper, as the flowers are similar in appearance to other stopper flowers. In the landscape, it’s versatile for use as a tall element in narrow spaces, as hedge or screening, as understory vegetation in an urban “woodland” design, and as a specimen shrub or small tree. But it is a slow grower.
